Stanley Johnson.| PHOTOGRAPHER.

Stanley Johnson is a photographer from Decatur, Georgia, living and working in Atlanta. His portraits and documentary photographs center Black life, with particular attention to the everyday experiences of people in the city he calls home.

His relationship to Atlanta extends across generations of his family. He photographs its streets, gatherings, and communities, returning to places he knows while building relationships with the people he meets. His work includes portraits made through extended conversation and photographs made in passing, bringing individual lives into view alongside the public life of the city.

Working with both film and digital photography, Johnson develops, scans, and prints his own film work. His practice extends from making photographs to selecting and sequencing them for books and exhibitions.

In 2024, he published For Yesterday Was Not Today, a book of black and white photographs centered on ordinary Black life. His exhibitions in Atlanta include From Decatur, With Love and For Yesterday Was Not Today.

Alongside his personal work, Johnson makes commissioned portraits and documentary photographs. He has photographed Anthony Edwards for Adidas Y‑3 through Three Fifths Media, and his practice has been featured by KEH Camera and in Paulie B’s Walkie Talkie series.
